Sports Partnerships: A Whole New Ball Game at UMKC

Partnerships with four professional Kansas City sports teams elevate the excitement and experience for Roos
The Midwest is known for enjoying all four seasons, but here in Kansas City, we have a few more: football, baseball and soccer. Hometown pride for our professional sports teams is evident throughout Kansas City, and at UMKC, we’re making it official. We’re proud to be one of the few universities in the country to officially partner with four professional sports teams.
Beginning this spring, UMKC is a partner to the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current and Sporting KC. These partnerships bring new opportunities for students, athletes, the university and the community. From our decade-long partnership with Sporting KC to our brand-new partnership with the Royals, we’re thrilled to bring the Roo experience to a new level.
“These four sports organizations have helped put Kansas City on not just a national stage but an international one through their excellence and innovation on and off the field,” said UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal, Ph.D. “Kansas City’s largest comprehensive university is proud to get a front seat and behind-the-scenes access to these world-class organizations.”

UMKC students make game-changing connections through partnerships
Kansas City is home to teams winning world championships and breaking historic ground. With the partnerships, UMKC students have unique access to the people who are part of these successes. Students will benefit from mentorship, educational programs, hands-on experience and financial support. The benefits provided by each partnership may be different, but they are all focused on the same thing: student success.
During the Fall 2023 semester, students in several UMKC organizations, including First Gen Roos, Professional Career Escalators and Men of Color, participated in leadership lunches and career shadowing featuring members of the Chiefs staff. Students have opportunities to learn from some of the best in their fields, whether it’s the director of player engagement, chief financial officer or the project director of construction. These programs are just the beginning of student opportunities at Arrowhead Stadium, with UMKC-exclusive internships and fellowships coming soon.
“Having an organization that is internationally known, like the Chiefs, reach out and show their support in our students’ career development is significant,” said Mako Miller (M.A. ‘13), director of UMKC Professional Career Escalators. “The Chiefs are providing long-term interaction, not just a one-off experience. It’s important for our students to see how the skills they’re learning can be utilized in various ways. Many of our students never considered working for a professional NFL team but through this experience, they can see how they need people involved in health care, marketing, human resources, engineering, communications and education.”
Career development and skills building aren’t the only benefits students get from these programs. The opportunity to network and learn how a successful person got to their position can be just as important for students.
"Opportunities like this don't exist everywhere and haven't always existed in higher education, and that's why we're so grateful for the Kansas City Chiefs' partnership. It’s a game-changer for the institution and our students overall,” said JaVon Hill (M.A. ‘20), director of the Men of Color Academy. “Our students are blessed to be part of this unique relationship that will open doors to unparalleled access and networks, serve as a direct launchpad for empowerment, spark inspiration and fuel innovation all at the same time. Kansas City truly is our classroom, and we appreciate the Chiefs organization for investing in our future leaders."
The Chiefs recognized that financial support is key to students achieving their best. The organization supports $15,000 in annual scholarships for UMKC students, along with $10,000 in student project funding.
Our decade-long partners, Sporting KC, have contributed to many students’ career development through internships. UMKC students have the first opportunity to apply for internships with Sporting KC. UMKC School of Law students in particular have had valuable experiences as legal interns, learning about sports law in the Soccer Capital of America.
Personal and professional growth opportunities for students
The 2024 National Women’s Soccer League season kicks off in March, as does the KC Current’s partnership with UMKC. Personal development is a focus of this partnership. The Kansas City women's soccer team (UMKC women’s soccer team) will partner with members of the KC Current team to learn about the dedication and skills it takes to succeed at the professional level.
The UMKC team will get a taste of the professional soccer experience by hosting a preseason and regular season match at the KC Current’s facility, the first ever built for a professional women’s sports team, along with several practices and observation of a KC Current training session. The observation will include a group address by the KC Current’s head coach.
The KC Current isn’t the only UMKC partner playing in March. When the Kansas City Royals celebrate Opening Day on March 28, Roos will be in attendance with another reason to celebrate. This spring, a select group of students will collaborate with Pine Tar Collective, the Royals’ in-house creative agency, to create a 30-second ad for UMKC.
The ad will air on the CrownVision videoboard on Opening Day and once during each homestand of the season. The students who work on the commercial will receive tickets to Opening Day to see the premiere of their work. This kind of hands-on experience and larger-than-life outcome are only available to UMKC students through the university’s partnership with the Royals.

“We are fortunate and grateful to partner with the KC Current organization. This partnership not only elevates our women’s soccer program but propels our effort to advance Kansas City.” - Brandon Martin
Growing our partnerships through celebration
Part of being a Roo is embracing the Kansas City spirit, and we’re bringing that to campus with our hometown teams. The KC Current will bring the Teal Mobile and several players to campus for spirit events and women’s soccer matches. In the Fall 2023 Semester, UMKC kicked off the Chiefs partnership with a celebration and visit from K.C. Wolf.
Sporting KC, our seasoned partner, brings some of their players to campus to take part in a soccer tournament with students. The university celebrates its annual UMKC Night at Sporting KC in the fall. A popular giveaway to all fans over the years has been the UMKC and Sporting KC tote bag, often spotted accompanying grocery shoppers across the metro. This past year at the annual UMKC and Sporting KC night, the Mobb pep band performed in front of the stadium, Chancellor Agrawal performed the coin toss and a Conservatory student sang the National Anthem.
No matter what Kansas City team you root for, UMKC does too!
Sports partnership opportunities extend from UMKC across Kansas City
If there is one thing that UMKC, the Chiefs, KC Current, Royals and Sporting KC have in common, it is commitment to Kansas City. Our shared hometown is always top of mind. We couldn’t create these new connections without including our community, youth in particular.
The KC Current partnership focuses on personal development, which will benefit girls in Kansas City metro schools. Each year, UMKC and the KC Current will participate in a community initiative at a public school to build the confidence and self-worth in girls of that school. These initiatives will expand on a pilot program the KC Current created at Lincoln Preparatory Academy.
“We are fortunate and grateful to partner with the KC Current organization,” said Brandon Martin, Ed.D., UMKC vice chancellor and athletics director. “This partnership not only elevates our women’s soccer program but propels our effort to advance Kansas City.”
Advancing Kansas City will also come in the form of a baseball-throwing robot, thanks to the UMKC/Royals partnership. “Bring Out the Bots” is a STEM initiative for high school students to create a robot to throw the first pitch at a Royals game. UMKC students and the KC STEM Alliance will work with students at a local high school to conceptualize and build a robot. When the robot is ready, the students will get tickets to attend a game and witness the robot throwing the first pitch. Additionally, UMKC and the Royals will donate 50 tickets to a youth organization for a gameday experience at a Royals game.
The Chiefs recognized that financial support is key to students achieving their best. The organization supports $15,000 in annual scholarships for UMKC students, along with $10,000 in student project funding.
UMKC creates new degree opportunities for professional athletes
Whether a professional athlete wants to get better on the field or off, UMKC is here to support them. In another groundbreaking move, UMKC will provide first-of-their-kind undergraduate and graduate opportunities to players actively on the KC Current roster. KC Current club players will be able to pursue a degree at UMKC while also pursuing their professional soccer goals.
With UMKC support, the Kansas City Royals are adding a new feature to the Royals Radio Network to highlight players in the farm system. The “Future Royals” feature will air twice a month during games and include a shoutout to UMKC at the beginning and end of each feature.
UMKC has sponsored Sporting KC’s “Sporting 101” segment that highlights the history and evolution of the club. From their first season in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz to now, Sporting KC has a long history in our hometown and we’re proud to be their partner.
When Kansas City teams win, UMKC wins
Partnering with these professional sports teams provides new opportunities to reach a large audience and show them what UMKC is all about. Fans of the Chiefs, KC Current, Royals and Sporting KC will see UMKC signage at every home game. When you watch the Royals on TV, you’ll see UMKC advertised in foul territory; you’ll hear about the university on the Royals Radio Network. Anyone attending a KC Current game at the first stadium built for a professional women’s team will see UMKC advertised as a proud partner on their digital billboard along I-635.
We’re proud to be Kansas City’s top university and the university of choice for many students.
