UMKC Law Foundation

DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE UMKC SCHOOL OF LAW,

You’ll see a story within this edition of Res Ipsa that celebrates the power of every donation. It opens by highlighting the transformational and historic estate gift from Kent Whittaker and his late wife, Judy (J.D. ’63) – a $3.5 million gift that is the largest in our school’s history and will be endowed to support student scholarships, building improvements and areas of greatest need. You’ll also learn about a scholarship that was established by an alum in memory of a loved family member and ways the UMKC School of Law’s Young Alumni Group raises funds to support our newest alumni with lunches at their bar exam. Philanthropic initiatives that are accessible to those newly entering the profession are incredibly valuable to building a long-term commitment to giving back. You’ll also learn that the UMKC Law Foundation’s Board of Trustees earmarked funding for renovations to the student lounge because there was a surplus of donations given to support the school’s greatest needs. Your unrestricted donations added up to allow for this building improvement. This helps us sustain our community by ensuring students want to study and gather at the law school by creating a comfortable and functional space. You deserve to be celebrated for your support of the UMKC School of Law! Within these pages, notice the testimonials from alumni who support our law students through philanthropy and the recognition of all alumni and friends who made gifts to the UMKC Law Foundation and School of Law during the past academic year. Your gifts enhance opportunities for our students and faculty members each year by providing scholarships, program funds, student and faculty awards and much more. On behalf of the UMKC Law Foundation, thank you so much for your involvement and investment.

Impact Giving

"I choose to financially give back to the UMKC School of Law because of the invaluable individual attention and mentorship I received from my professors during my time there. Their dedication to my education and professional development played a crucial role in shaping my career, and I recognize that I would not be where I am today without the strong foundation provided by the school. Supporting UMKC is my way of ensuring that future students can benefit from the same level of guidance and support that made a significant difference in my life.”

Andrew Snavely (J.D. '05)

Bar Preparation Support and Lunch at the Bar

“I have enjoyed acting as co-chair of the UMKC Law Young Alumni Committee since I graduated law school in 2020. Every year, I am happy to donate to the Young Alumni Committee’s Lunch at the Bar Fundraiser because I am making a recent graduate’s bar-taking experience just a little better and paying back the support I felt when taking the bar.”

Olivia Dobard (J.D. '20) Regulatory Compliance Specialist, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City

Michael Matteuzzi Trial Advocacy Scholarship Endowed Fund

“UMKC School of Law did a lot for me. The trial advocacy and national trial team competition work centered my career pursuits, which continues to be my focus professionally. Forty years later, I get to enjoy my son’s graduation from UMKC Law.”

Michael D. Matteuzzi (J.D. '85) Founding Shareholder, President, and Managing Attorney, Matteuzzi Law
